Coinbase announced the opening of its Engineering Hub in Singapore, a strategic move aimed at enhancing the city-state’s blockchain ecosystem and strengthening Coinbase’s presence in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the Engineering Hub seeks to nurture local developer talent and encourage blockchain innovation.
The new Engineering Hub will provide Singapore-based engineers with training and resources to drive innovation within the local blockchain ecosystem. Currently, Coinbase employs over 600 people across APAC, with 70 employees in Singapore—a number expected to grow with the Hub’s launch. By building local expertise, Coinbase aims to make Singapore a key player in advancing Web3 technology.
Hassan Ahmed, Country Director of Coinbase Singapore, highlighted the partnership with EDB as a commitment to Singapore’s blockchain future: “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Singapore Economic Development Board to launch our Engineering Hub. This move reflects our dedication to supporting Singapore’s vibrant developer community and to making Singapore a center for blockchain excellence in Asia.” Ahmed emphasized the Hub’s role in enabling Singapore’s engineers to build “the future of Web3” and contribute to the goals of the Smart Nation 2.0 strategy.
Driving Singapore’s Competitive Edge in Fintech
Philbert Gomez, Executive Director & Head of Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), welcomed Coinbase’s latest venture, noting that the Engineering Hub “expands the breadth of opportunities for talent to pursue world-class product engineering work in Singapore and underscores our status as a hub for responsible blockchain innovation.”
This move comes on the heels of Coinbase’s recent regulatory milestone: obtaining a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore in October 2023. The license enables Coinbase to offer a wider range of secure cryptocurrency services to retail and institutional clients, cementing its role in Singapore’s financial landscape.
Coinbase’s latest efforts in Singapore build on its expanding influence across the APAC region. This year alone, Coinbase partnered with DigitalX for Bitcoin ETF services in Australia and collaborated with Shping, an Australian blockchain rewards platform. Through its ventures arm, Coinbase has also invested in 18 Singapore-based blockchain companies, reinforcing its commitment to the region’s crypto ecosystem.
