SBS Transit, Singapore’s leading public transport operator, has signed a S$14 million long-term service support (LTSS) contract with Motorola Solutions to maintain and upgrade the critical TETRA radio communications systems used on the Downtown Line and Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (LRT) networks. The 15-year contract aims to ensure seamless communications and support the growing demand for reliable public transport.

TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) systems are vital to SBS Transit’s operations, enabling secure communication between front-line workers and command centres. These systems play a key role in coordinating incident responses, ensuring passenger safety, and facilitating emergency communications.

Under the new agreement, Motorola Solutions will provide ongoing technical support and system updates to ensure the long-term reliability and resilience of SBS Transit’s radio systems. This includes on-site and remote network monitoring, cyber resilience services, and system upgrades. The contract covers over 8,700 radios used daily across the transit operator’s network, ensuring the highest levels of performance and operational safety.

“Our TETRA radio solutions provide secure communication links between front-line workers and command centres, helping to strengthen awareness, collaboration and safety across entire operations,” said Rajat Gupta, vice president for Motorola Solutions Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa.

This partnership allows SBS Transit to focus on its core operations, knowing that critical communications infrastructure is securely managed by Motorola Solutions.

Supporting Future Rail Expansion

The LTSS contract comes at a pivotal time, as SBS Transit continues to expand its rail services to meet growing demand. The Downtown Line will soon add two new stations, improving travel options and reducing commute times by up to 15 minutes for passengers traveling from Singapore’s east to west.

With rail ridership growing by more than 18% in 2023, reaching 428 million passenger trips, the demand for reliable public transport services is at an all-time high. The upgraded TETRA systems will play a key role in supporting the network’s future expansion and ensuring safe, efficient operations.
