PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo Group), Indonesia’s leading digital ecosystem, recently concluded its 2024 Engineering Bootcamp, reinforcing its commitment to developing homegrown tech talent. The program, part of GoTo’s strategic push to drive Indonesia’s digital economy forward, graduated 43 newly minted tech engineers, preparing them for careers in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing sectors.
Launched in 2018, the GoTo Engineering Bootcamp has evolved into a critical component of the company’s talent development strategy. The initiative reflects GoTo’s broader goals of positioning Indonesia as a hub for tech innovation and leadership.
A Pipeline for Local Talent
GoTo’s Chief Executive Officer Patrick Walujo highlighted the urgency of nurturing Indonesian tech talent in response to the country’s rapid digital transformation. “Since its inception, GoTo has consistently nurtured the development of exceptional tech talent, as a way to drive innovation throughout our business,” Walujo said. “This is part of our mission and passion to support Indonesia’s growth. We also recognize the urgent need to develop and equip homegrown tech talent in line with Indonesia’s rapid expansion and its potential to become the largest digital economy in Southeast Asia.”
GoTo’s commitment to Indonesia’s long-term digital progress is apparent in the success of its bootcamp graduates. Over 250 participants have completed the program since its launch, with ten percent advancing to senior leadership roles within the company.
Hands-On Training for a Dynamic Industry
The nine-week intensive program provided participants with hands-on experience, sharpening both their coding skills and engineering principles. Puneet Goyal, Gojek’s Chief Technology Officer and program champion, emphasized the holistic nature of the training. “More than just technical skills, this bootcamp equips participants with the mindset to channel their curiosity toward technology and the confidence to excel in their careers,” Goyal said.
The curriculum includes coding challenges, professional development workshops, and one-on-one mentoring, providing trainees with valuable industry insights from both internal and external experts. This hands-on approach has been instrumental in helping graduates secure full-time positions at Gojek and GoTo Financial, playing key roles in the company’s product development.
Broader Contributions to Indonesia’s Digital Workforce
Beyond its engineering initiatives, GoTo has expanded its talent development efforts through the launch of the GoTo Product Management Bootcamp. This program aims to accelerate the growth of product managers with a comprehensive, world-class curriculum designed to address the talent needs of Indonesia’s tech industry.
GoTo’s efforts to boost local talent have had measurable impact. According to research from LPEM UI, the company’s presence across Indonesia has resulted in a 2.2 to 3.1 percent increase in digitally skilled workers between 2018 and 2023, with the effect more pronounced outside Java and Bali, where a 3.3 to 4.25 percent rise in digital talent was observed.
As Indonesia eyes its digital future, GoTo’s efforts to build a robust pipeline of tech professionals remain a cornerstone of the country’s broader economic ambitions.
