Telecommunications provider M1 announced that it will retire all 3G services, including voice, messaging, and data, from 1 August 2024. This strategic move aligns with global trends as leading markets phase out older technologies to prioritize the development of advanced 5G networks.

The cessation of 3G services will enable M1 to reallocate spectrum resources to bolster its 5G offerings, promising users faster speeds, higher data throughput, enhanced security, and greater reliability. The company has been actively encouraging customers reliant on 3G networks to transition to 4G and 5G-compatible devices.

Since announcing the 3G network retirement in July 2023, M1 has intensified outreach efforts, utilizing calls, SMSes, and emails to inform customers of the transition. Staff at M1 retail stores have also been assisting customers, particularly the elderly, in upgrading their devices. These initiatives have significantly reduced the number of 3G handset users within M1’s customer base.

Currently, all M1 mobile customers are on 4G or 5G plans. To ensure minimal service disruption, M1 has offered attractive promotions for upgrading to 4G or 5G-enabled handsets, including a no-contract option to acquire a new handset for as low as $168, along with additional trade-in discounts for 3G devices.

“Singapore is leading the way globally and in the region with a high rate of 5G adoption. We’re excited for more customers to experience faster speeds, close to real-time network responses, and enhanced connectivity,” said Mr. Manjot Singh Mann, M1’s Chief Executive Officer. “Through our proactive and frequent communications about the cessation of 3G services across various channels, we have ensured that our customers are well-informed in advance, with only a small percentage still reliant on 3G today. For these remaining customers, we urge them to make the switch soon or let us know if they need further help.”

Customers needing assistance can contact the M1 hotline or visit any M1 retail store before the end of July. Priority lines and queues will be available to facilitate the transition.
