Singapore’s first multi-industry on-demand gig work platform, Jobs on Demand (Jod), has introduced JodRewards. This new initiative aims to provide gig workers with a range of employment benefits akin to those of traditional full-time employees.

According to a local survey by Jod involving 1,000 of its members, a significant 80% of gig workers feel they lack access to traditional employment benefits. In response, Jod has launched JodRewards, a benefits program designed to enhance the financial and social protection of its users.

The program was developed in the context of a growing trend towards gig work, spurred by desires for improved work-life balance and a recognition of mental health, which have become particularly pronounced since the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2023 annual survey by DBS highlighted that gig workers are often financially vulnerable, with many relying on their savings amidst rising living costs.

Sebastian San, Singapore Country Manager of Jod, shared, “We are excited to launch JodRewards and play a leading role in empowering Singapore’s gig workforce – an important backbone for today’s economy. Beyond just a conventional hiring platform, Jod caters to flexible on-demand gig work across various sectors. Eight in ten of our members are seeking greater protection and employment benefits. In response to this growing demand, we’re committed to safeguarding the benefits of these gig workers. Since the launch of JodRewards, we’ve sponsored over S$400,000 worth of Group Personal Accident and Group Public Liability coverage for over 300 jobs. We are honoured by the trust and support that our brand partners have placed in us, and will continue to work towards enhancing social protection for our gig workforce.”

Since its soft launch in April, JodRewards has engaged over 1,000 active users and facilitated the redemption of rewards worth approximately S$12,755. The program features a tiered system where members earn points through job completion, which can be redeemed for various benefits including transport, meal, and grocery vouchers.

In addition to financial rewards, JodRewards offers substantial insurance coverage underwritten by Etiqa Insurance Singapore. This includes up to S$100,000 in coverage for permanent disability, accidental death, and public liability per accident.

The program also promises more personalized benefits like paid break time and paid annual leave, catering specifically to the needs of flexible workers.

Looking ahead, Jod plans to introduce further enhancements to JodRewards, including Prolonged Medical Leave and a unique Worker and Hiring Manager Cancellation Coverage in Southeast Asia, aiming to reduce the uncertainties of gig work.

As gig work continues to be an integral part of the modern economy, initiatives like JodRewards are crucial for providing a safety net and promoting a more sustainable and equitable working environment.
