In April, WhatsApp announced the integration of Meta AI into the popular messaging app. This decision left me wondering, why would WhatsApp do this? Was it to follow the trend of generative AI just because?

Similar to existing offerings in the market, Meta AI can answer your questions and generate images based on your imagination.

Why does Meta AI exist?
Since the launch of Meta AI, I’ve noticed its presence across my Meta apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and even WhatsApp. It effortlessly integrated itself into my social life, outshining the trusted Search function.
I found myself questioning its existence, as I don’t really need it. So, what is Meta’s goal here?
While it’s tempting to believe in dark motivations and exciting conspiracy theories behind Meta’s new AI product, such evidence is likely well hidden.
So, who better to question the existence of Meta AI than the progenitor of generative AI, ChatGPT?
“Meta created Meta AI to advance AI research, improve their products, and share their findings with the broader scientific community, enhancing user experiences and fostering innovation in the field.”
As for Meta AI, it told me practically its eagerness to be my friend.
In short, it said, “I’m here to assist, inform, and entertain, providing support across various tasks and offering companionship, all while contributing to the advancement of AI technology.”
Data Privacy Concerns
WhatsApp is dedicated to ensuring user privacy through end-to-end encryption of chats. This means that your information is inaccessible to anyone else, including Meta.
Primarily, data collected includes usage statistics, device information, and metadata, which are used to optimize operations and enhance user experience.
However, it’s reasonable if you feel uneasy about an AI present in the apps you use socially, especially in chats. If you’re among those concerned, you might want to limit your use of Meta AI or refrain from sharing confidential information over the app, as it can’t be entirely turned off.
