Singaporean travelers are looking to broaden their horizons in 2024, with an average of 4.6 planned trips per person, showcasing a robust return to international travel. According to Visa’s latest Global Travel Intentions Report, Japan has dethroned Malaysia as the most coveted destination among Singaporeans, highlighting a significant shift in travel preferences within the region.

The allure of Japan’s rich culinary diversity and vibrant cultural experiences has positioned it as the preferred choice for 21% of Singapore travelers, surpassing Malaysia (18%) and Australia (15%). This trend is reflective of broader travel patterns across the Asia Pacific, emphasizing a collective appetite for unique dining experiences and exploration.

Adeline Kim, Visa Country Manager for Singapore & Brunei said, “We are excited to see the return of travel and looking at Visa’s data, travel spend by our cardholders has exceeded pre-pandemic levels and continues to grow at more than 40 percent year-on-year. In the month of December last year, Japan was the top travel destination in terms of spend for Singaporeans, and this is aligned with the findings from our Global Travel Intentions Study research. Malaysia also continues to be a popular destination of choice and was the top travel destination in terms of spending last quarter. Travel will continue to be an integral part of Singaporeans lifestyles and we are committed to providing seamless and secure payment solutions to support their travel aspirations.”

The report also highlighted the importance of seamless travel experiences, particularly in Japan, where Visa is championing the adoption of contactless payment solutions for public transit. This initiative aims to streamline payments for Singaporean travelers in Japan, reflecting the country’s advancements in contactless technology and its leading position in tap-to-pay initiatives across the Asia Pacific.

Leisure and relaxation remain the primary motivators for Singapore travelers, with 61% citing relaxation as their top reason for travel, followed by shopping (39%) and the desire to learn something new (32%). Interestingly, shopping is a more significant motivator for Singaporeans compared to their Asia Pacific and global counterparts, underscoring the unique preferences of Singaporean travelers.

Despite the enthusiasm for travel, Singaporeans are mindful of the rising costs associated with their adventures. The average expenditure per trip in 2023 stood at USD 3,382, with dining and shopping being the top spending categories. In response to increased travel expenses, approximately 40% of Singaporean travelers are willing to adjust their itineraries, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to budgeting for their journeys.

Looking ahead, sustainability, technology, and event tourism are poised to shape the future of travel. With over 16 million customers opting for low-carbon travel options according to Trip.com Group’s ESG report, there’s a growing interest among Singaporeans to engage in environmentally friendly travel practices. This sentiment is echoed in Visa’s report, which revealed that over 80% of Singaporeans are keen on participating in activities with a lower environmental impact, highlighting a conscientious shift towards sustainable tourism.
