Leica, the German manufacturer of optical instruments, has teamed up with Walt Disney to unveil a limited edition camera to mark the 100th anniversary of the film studios. For over a century, Leica has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the world of imaging, making it the perfect choice for creative people, particularly those who work with images.
Disney and Leica’s collaboration dates back to the early days of animation, where Disney used Leica (then called Leitz) cameras and projectors to create sophisticated cartoon storyboards. The innovative Leica instruments of the time changed the techniques of animated filmmaking so dramatically that the term “Leica Reel” was coined during this period.
Now, to celebrate this groundbreaking partnership, Leica and Disney are unveiling a closely guarded secret: the special limited-edition Leica Q2 | Disney “100 Years of Wonder” camera. The design of this special edition camera is inspired by a model sheet created in 1937 by one of Walt Disney Studio’s noted animators, Don Towsley. In addition, a Mickey Mouse print adorns the camera’s top plate, and the set comes with a protective dust bag with matching original Disney graphics and a special rope strap.
The Leica Q2 | Disney “100 Years of Wonder” edition is limited to only 500 sets worldwide and will be available at Leica Store, the Leica Online Store, and authorized Leica dealers starting from April 27, 2023. It will retail at €6,200 incl. VAT, while stocks last. The camera is sure to be a hit among amateur collectors, with its unique material reminiscent of the tracing paper on which Disney’s creators penciled scenes and characters, giving the camera a sophisticated aesthetic.
