Coursera Launches Learning App in ChatGPT to Expand Access to Education

Coursera has become the first online learning platform to be directly embedded in ChatGPT, following OpenAI’s unveiling of its first generation of apps during its annual DevDay event. The move aims to make trusted educational content more accessible to millions of users worldwide.

The new Coursera app in ChatGPT allows users to access relevant learning videos and course information within conversations, creating what the companies describe as an interactive, AI-driven learning experience. According to OpenAI, more than 800 million people use ChatGPT weekly, with learning among its most common applications.

Making Education More Discoverable

Users can now request the Coursera app by name or encounter it when ChatGPT recognises that Coursera’s content may enhance a conversation. The integration, powered by OpenAI’s new Apps SDK, connects learners to curated educational resources from Coursera’s global network of universities and industry partners.

“This partnership reflects Coursera and OpenAI’s shared commitment to expanding access to education and helping people everywhere learn, grow, and thrive,” said Greg Hart, chief executive officer of Coursera. “By putting trusted, verified learning into the hands of hundreds of millions of people, we can help them gain the skills they need to pursue economic opportunity and prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Combining Human Expertise and AI

OpenAI’s vice president of education Leah Belsky said ChatGPT has become a popular tool for those seeking to learn something new. “The most powerful learning experiences happen when human expertise and AI work together,” she said. “By bringing the expertise of world-class educators and institutions within Coursera into ChatGPT, learners can more easily find trusted content, build job-ready skills, and unlock new opportunities.”

The integration underscores a growing trend in the education technology sector, where AI is increasingly used to personalise learning experiences and improve access to high-quality content. Coursera’s entry into ChatGPT positions it alongside other major education platforms exploring AI-driven discovery tools.

Availability and Next Steps

The Coursera app in ChatGPT is available from today to all logged-in users outside the European Union on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. It currently supports English, with video subtitles and dubbing offered in select languages.Coursera and OpenAI said they plan to continue exploring new ways generative AI can make learning more personal, interactive, and scalable. The companies expect future updates to expand language support and add integration with more learning features.
